We did this to ourselves by letting go of right/wrong which always leads to a collapse society one way or the other either by conquest or by an iron fist. This also means they have to make PC's be less and less easy for users so they can only do things they be spied upon and make it less tinkerable and furthermore make it so they won't WANT to do it.
